When a decision is made to build or retrofit a green energy building, solar or wind power systems are often the first logical things to consider. There are certain things that should be taken into consideration when considering a green energy building.

Firstly an understanding of just what the desired solar power supply will be used for. This will tell you the size of the system you need and whether you have the space to actually house the system. Without addressing this point, you run the risk of being disappointed if you do not produce enough power to run the appliances in your home. For instance, if you want to run just your water heating system or your pool on solar power, then you are likely going to need a smaller system than if you plan to run your entire home on solar power.

What will also affect the efficiency of any system is the kind of local weather that you have. In light of technological advances in the field, it’s true that solar power does not necessarily need hot sunny days. In fact even cloudy conditions can produce solid results, however for planning and efficiency it’s best to have an understanding of the average weather conditions of your area. Skies that are clear and that allow the heat and light from the sun to reach the solar cells are the ideal.

Worth knowing before you go ahead and make preparations to install any solar power systems is to find out if the installation will be in accordance with the local laws and regulations. Unfortunately some local regulators are not yet up to speed on the pros of installing home solar power systems and so you might have to go through some form of local inspection before you’re even allowed to put up any equipment.

What’s good to know though, is that some of the financial burden of utilizing solar power can often be met by local agencies. Look into government and state grants and other funding. Check to see if your local area offers grants or tax returns to install a system and then apply for everything you are eligible for. The decision to install green energy powered solar or wind systems is an important one that should be carefully researched.
