There are numerous ways for companies to increase their net gain, and most of them focus on sales and marketing. But for companies that are looking to profit in every way possible, decreasing their power costs is as important as increasing their sales. In a perfect business world, a company’s sales would continue to grow without setback. But for most companies, sales efforts ride the wave of consumer buying power. Reducing power costs through energy efficient construction, on the other hand, allows companies to pad their profits with the same amount of cost savings year after year.

A recent survey concerning the decision-making of company executives in relation to energy efficiency revealed the following data: 52 percent of surveyed executives said that they were investing in energy efficient construction as a cost saving measure, and 62 percent reported that they were more focused on energy efficient design than they were as recently as five years ago. To offer an idea of how much money a company can save by implementing energy-efficient design, it helps to look at the two biggest power consumers in most commercial buildings: an HVAC system and an interior lighting system, which account for roughly 40 to 60 percent and 30 percent of a commercial building’s electrical usage, respectively.

Over 30 years, 50 percent of an HVAC system’s total cost-including first cost and maintenance cost-results from energy usage. Keeping this mind, consider that taking a simple measure like downsizing air distribution fans, which account for 7 percent of a commercial building’s total electrical cost, can reduce a building’s annual power costs by roughly four percent. Combine a reduction in fan size with a reduction in chiller size and the implementation of a high efficiency boiler -none of which compromise temperature quality-and the four percent reduction can more than triple.

To achieve an energy efficient lighting system, many companies choose to retrofit incandescent lighting systems to accommodate fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent lighting is five times more energy efficient than incandescent lighting. More specifically, an incandescent light bulb costs $30 more in energy usage over the course of its lifetime than a fluorescent bulb. If your company uses thousands of light bulbs or even hundreds, simply replacing incandescent lighting with fluorescent lighting can result in five-figure cost savings.

While the majority of a company’s bottom line is determined by its ability to succeed in the business arena, cutting energy costs by working with an energy efficient consultant can mean the difference between a great bottom lines result and a superior bottom line. Because wasted energy is wasted money, remodeling your building for energy efficiency is more than just good for the environment; it’s also invaluable for your company.

By working with an energy efficient consultant, companies can dramatically increase their bottom line. After implementing energy efficient construction through HVAC retrofitting and energy efficient lighting, most companies realize at least a five-figure decrease in their annual power costs.
