Canada’s National Housing Act?

I hear a lot of people talking about how much cheaper it was to buy a home in the 1950’s. I am sure there are a lot of reasons for why this may be, but I am under the impression that a lot of the reason for why home prices were so cheap back then is because of the massive scale that homes were being built; a huge increase in supply will drive down prices, and that the fact that during that time, the federal government provided significant subsidies through CMHC. This, I think, was the result of a need to house all of the returning soldiers after WWII. Get an amazing deal on office home and student just $79. Is this the case, that home prices were kept somewhat artificially low because of government programs? If so, does anyone know the extent of the subsidies provided to an average home owner and how it compares to today?
